Holy cow—- that business you built? You have to move it to a new town, into a community you may not know all that well (if at all). So how do you go about moving your business, honoring the wedding professionals in your new area, curating your portfolio, and following the regulations?

In Episode 48 of the Be Fabbo Podcast Moving Your Business Forward Without Fear, the conversation turns to diving deep with The Restart Specialist, a vital topic for the times every wedding creative lives in.

Meet Meredith

Meredith, a former college art professor turned photographer who never dreamed of owning a business now does that and more. As an Army wife and a momma to two crazy minions, she learned quickly that she couldn’t just do the thing she was passionate about. She had to find a way to balance the art with not only running a business but also restarting it over and over again in new places. Out of that experience, she became obsessed with helping creatives develop a flexible and efficient business model that enables them to thrive in the market they are in or the market they want to be in. Meredith is a total INFJ who can often be mistaken for an extrovert with a pursuit for deep conversations held over a glass of whisky. She loves hole in the wall restaurants, museums, and farmers markets.

“Pivoting my business over and over again has forced me to cut through the bs in order to get to the heart of what restarting a business looks like.”

Relocation Prep

Start by talking about the area you are moving to or want to work in. Use social media and your blog to begin showing your work from those areas. Visit the area as a tourist and get to see the city, then start building content marketing strategies to showcase that you are excited about these new backdrops and look forward to serving couples here.  Extend your availability to collaborate.

Research the wedding market and the vendor community in these cities. One of the easiest ways in finding and joining FB groups and get to know the who what and where of weddings. It’s a personal choice if you want to 2nd shoot so if you are in your first 5 years of your business, that might be beneficial to go this route. If that is your decision, seek out those groups. Be honest that your intent is to move or that you are new to the area and that you are relocating and reestablishing your business. Put in the effort to build these relationships early.

More From the Candid Conversations

Business is business no matter where you are located. State to state laws and requirements will change so you need to know what is required to ‘be legal’ and set up where you are and where you want to go.

Invest in getting things in place to protect you and your business so you can keep moving forward.

While relocating is scary, it’s much easier than when you first started, but being the new kid on the block comes with both anxiety and excitement.

You will find a new spark as you are working in new surroundings, meeting new couples and embracing this new opportunity. It’s hard to leave the business that you have built, but take all those lessons and be willing to adjust and welcome all the new ones as well!

Of course we chatted Covid-19 and that it’s okay to be upset and feel all those emotions, but be aware current and future couples are watching how we as the industry are reacting. We are the experts that they are looking to navigate and guide them to a new version of their wedding.

The Covid pivot. Using these pauses in weddings to work on the areas of our business that kept getting pushed to the back of the to-do list. Try something new to get creative, grab some film and re-explore this medium. Cut back on purchases, tighten your belt and save you and your business money while still serving your business well.

Episode Takeaways Worth Repeating

Run an efficient business regardless of relocation.

Be intentional on the area or market you are relocating to/wanting to work in.  DESTINATION photographer needs to be more specific, such as  SAVANNAH WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER.

Add value without lowering your price to fit in.

Honor the hard working vendors in the market you are relocating to.
