The Essential Takeaways:
Hi, everybody. Welcome to the wedding MBA podcast. We talk to the amazing presenters and educators and experts that grace our stages at the Wedding MBA Conference, which this year 2022 will be November 7 through the ninth at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, and you want to get your tickets as quickly as you can. They get more expensive. The closer we get to the conference, go to weddingmba.com and click on Purchase your tickets. And at the end of this episode, I will tell you how user-friendly those tickets are and I will give you a discount code. But I want to talk to our special guest. I am so excited. This person gets everybody excited. It is the most magical thing to talk to her. She is the one and the only Bobbi Brinkman. Bobbi, how are you?
Bobbi Brinkman 0:45
I am absolutely fabbo, and what’s an intro? I mean, you are equally as amazing as well as all the listeners. I’m super excited to be here. Thank you for the opportunity, my friend.
Oh, the opportunity is ours. Now Bobbi, tell us where you are and what you do.
Bobbi Brinkman 0:59
So I’m in St. Simons Island, Georgia. Yes, that’s right, Georgia, we have a beach. It’s a 6-mile island, an hour south of Savannah and an hour north of Jacksonville. So right in the middle of all the things you can do with things you can’t do, you’re open to everything. I’m right smack dab there. And I am a motivational speaker. And my mission is to encourage and empower wedding creatives go-getters to believe in themselves, and embrace the fact that they are fabbo exactly the way they are to build and grow their business and to build the life that they deserve and they want to have, and they can do that in this wedding industry, my friend.
You know, it’s a fascinating thing before you hit the record button, you said something that I thought was brilliant, you said that they’re going to come away from the conference with action steps to help their businesses, but they need to be able to put those steps into action. And that’s the motivation to do so. Can you expand on that a bit?
Bobbi Brinkman 1:56
Well, right, I think everybody comes to the conferences, especially wedding MBA and, we’re all excited as the end of the year, a lot of us are wrapping up. And we come there with our notebooks and our cameras and our recorders. And we’re ready to just soak in all the amazing, amazing speakers that are there, your industry leaders, so that had been around for a long time, right. And what happens is we go in there, we’re all excited, we write down because we feel it, we feel the energy, then we get on that plane, or we get on that train, and we drive home. And because it’s November, we kind of just put things away, we don’t come back and do it. And so we lose that enthusiasm. And I believe that mindset and believing in yourself is a business strategy. And while you’ll solve some of the courses that you’ll take from the amazing speakers, is they’ll give you a QR code with three things to do immediately to get money in your bank account or seven steps to close that next sale. I want you to walk away from there knowing that you’re unstoppable. Knowing that you are the secret sauce and knowing that you have to be your biggest cheerleader, right, you’ve got to bet on yourself. This is an industry that is of service heart-centered. But we need to be able to make a profit, you can still walk in your purpose, and I’m all about that. But we’re here to make a profit. This isn’t an expensive hobby. This is a way that we choose to serve. But you have to believe in yourself and I want you to leave my session, and go to the next session. And just grab that energy that you felt because of who you are, and what you can do. Not just the big dollar signs are not just about the latest and greatest technology, which are very important. But you have to embrace what makes you fabbo. And you have to listen to the speakers and take bits and pieces here. Make that big recipe, put it in a big bowl, and have a lot of your personality in it. So that when you get ready to bake that recipe clip, Clint you’re going to have the amazing, profitable, profitable business, because it’s your own secret recipe because you’re the secret sauce.
Let’s make it a secret sauce. And by the way, thanks. I do feel like a secret sauce sometimes. I am curious about what you do to stay motivated yourself. It seems to me that there would be certain steps certain I don’t know, reminders, how do you handle that?
Bobbi Brinkman 4:05
You know, I wake up every day. And I know that I have today, right? I’ve made mistakes like everybody else. And I think it’s important for those of us that are in the industry to share the steps that we’ve taken. I have stumbled a lot. You know, I’ve had some financial woes because I trusted the wrong people along the way. I kind of let that knock me down. But I knew I’m leaning into my calling as a wedding photographer. But I also lean into my passion as a motivational speaker and want to encourage everybody so every single day I wake up and I have finished my day the night before with my list ready to go today. All I have to do is get through that list. I stay motivated to focus and be clear on what I have to do in front of me. And that motivates me because I get to be grateful that I am the CEO and that if I get done with my list, I can go to the movie and see the latest Top Gun or I can walk down to the beach or I can also get one of my coaching students and walk them through a path and walk them through a struggle points, I stay motivated by cheering other people on. And that allows me the opportunity to keep doing what I’m doing. Because I want everybody to have the life and the business that they want. That’s why they started. And we sometimes forget in this industry with all the flash and all the nine scores on Instagram, and just what everybody else is doing. We get into that, you know, that self-limiting belief, we talk negatively ourselves, I talk positively myself every day. I know that sounds like we will. But I tell myself every day that I’m here for a purpose. And my purpose today is what accomplished my list, my list will get me on to the next level, that level will keep growing, and I’m able to serve my photography clients, as well as my coaching clients. And I’m able to just be present and what I’m working on now, which motivates me to be able to get through my day than do it all over again tomorrow.
Well, you know, it’s interesting, Bobbi, because I like I think that people are going to be listening to this episode a lot simpler for that shot in the arm that they need that shot in the heart if you will. And I’m curious that you personally like to have a checklist. Do you prioritize the checklist? How do you construct that?
Bobbi Brinkman 6:26
I try to do I try to make sure that number one, that when I leave on the day before that I have got my list 🗒️ ready to go. So when I leave, I leave with my desk time I clean I know the creative people are always supposed to be the smart credit people who haven’t a sloppy desk, and that’s great. But I leave with my list done. So I try to do 10 things in the morning by 10 o’clock. And so when I have my list the day before I get those 10 things done before 10 o’clock in the morning, and I don’t defer, I follow that list, I get those things done, I do the things that are going to make me that profit. But the deal here is you’ve got to stay focused on this list. So I do 10 things before 10 o’clock. And I’m able to do that because the day before I’ve got that list ready to go. And I don’t deviate from that list until it’s done.
Okay, what I heard you say, and please correct me if I’m wrong, what I heard you say is that when you construct your list, you go to what’s going to bring money into the business first, then you start doing the other things that may not be necessarily a driver to the bottom line, but they’re necessary for the operation of the business. Did I hear that first? money first? 💰
Bobbi Brinkman 8:00
Yeah, 100%. Because we know that we need to be rewarded, right? You know, we did not leave a nine to five, or we did not start a business to not be able to support ourselves. So if you are going to your job and you drive into your job, you may hate your job. But you’re driving there and you get there, you know that the minute you show up there, at the end of the week, you’re going to get your paycheck, right. So whatever you do on your nine to five, you have to put that mindset that CEO mindset in on your business as well wake up, make sure that the things that you like to do that you’re privileged to get to do because you’re your own boss, you get those things done. I think we’ve all heard that Clint, you have to do the things that you don’t like to do to move your business forward, getting in there and getting money off the top of the day, anything that needs to bring money in, that’s a pretty good way to start your day, even though we shouldn’t start a business to make money, we should start a business to make an impact, right? But money is a key element here because we want to keep doing this so that we can help others and make an impact in other people’s lives as well.
So it’s interesting that you don’t consider social media to be a primary concern. And I support that– I think that’s fine. But what I am curious about is social media is self-explanatory. So what about other people and how they impact your mood and your motivation? How do you handle that?
Bobbi Brinkman 11:22
Oh, man, that is, you know, that is one thing that can, you know, you get that negativity coming around, you get that one person that’s, that’s always screaming and complaining, you know, in there, I’m sure that there are days that I’m guilty of that, you know, not on purpose. But I may have said something out loud, like, you know, gosh, another person complaining about this boom? Well, you know, two years ago, we complained about nothing. And while the boom is real as it might be, or as fake as it might be, it’s what we’re in right now. And so to hear everybody’s so upset about being busy or not having time, it’s a Negative Nelly. And so I find on social media, I’m either seeing people that are so upset or complaining about their clients, or they’re trying another way to figure out why I’m not worthy of something or I just can’t raise my price or everybody’s undercutting. So, you know, probably a lot of because my age, you know, I’m 60. So, you know, I didn’t learn that craft. Well, I didn’t grow up with that hack. When I started, you know, Clint, I the one 800 Number in my studio office, in my window, call one 800 had the yellow pages that you know that you can’t go changing, right? You’re stuck with whatever it says there. So when I get on social media, I just don’t find a lot of positivity, I find a lot of negative or I could do if I could do this. And I think again, it’s that mindset, instead of wasting our time talking about what’s not happening, why don’t we figure out a way to make things better for ourselves and for our industry. So we can elevate all of ourselves.
So what do you do when it hits the fan? And you’re just not feeling happy? You know, how do you bring yourself up out of a funk,
Bobbi Brinkman 12:57
I will go for a walk. 🚶♀️I’m a big walker, I’m big of stepping away from my desk and a big what the view is in front of me, right, I have to step away. And I’m not gonna lie. I mean, I have a lot and there are times that I just slowly sit down, and I’ll have a good old-fashioned hard cry, you know, this big old lesbian that I am, I do have a soft spot. And I cry a lot on stage because I’ll tell a story about something to happen or, or something that happened with a client, especially if I’m talking LGBTQ inclusivity I’ll talk about a story there. I get mad, and I cry and I sit down and then I go, Okay, I’m somebody that can come up with a solution. I’m solution-driven. I get knocked down. You know, 2020, what was I going to do after 40 years, Clint, if I could not do what I wanted to do, I was already ending my career in, in photography, and I built a referral-based business. And there are just days, and there are moments in my 40-year career that I’ve sat down and thought, Man, am I really doing what I’m supposed to be doing? How can I do better 2020 knocked the crap out of me, like, there’s so many, I was able to figure out, I’m just gonna keep pushing forward. But I had to sit down and dig deep. And then to get out my pencil, and I write down four or five steps I can take now and see where that leads me. But I even as a motivator, I need to motivate myself.
So the last question I want to ask you, Bobbi, because this has been just fascinating, is let’s say you take on a new client, as a motivator as well, would you be willing? Do you have individual clients that you work with?
Bobbi Brinkman 15:54
I do, I have three or four, I don’t take a lot of those. Because I really like to hone in I like to sit with somebody, I think I have my Fabbo Chats where you know, it’s an hour of basically pick my brain, you bring one situation, and let’s talk through it. But I’m also the kind of coach or consultant that I’m not going to do the work for you, I’m really going to help you dive deep and see that the issue is really the issue is behind the question or the question behind the question, and it’s right in front of you. So why are you stuck? How come you keep spinning your wheels? So when a new client comes to me and they do reach out? To me, that’s usually where I am. It’s like, why do you feel that you’re stuck? Where do you really want to go? Because you can get on this fast escalator and get to the top really fast. But even if you get there, what are you going to do?
Because if you haven’t struggled at some point, how? How are you going to be able to learn from it then because, without those struggles, we don’t know that we have victories and we need to celebrate wins, big and small all the time as creative entrepreneurs?
But when clients come to me and say I just some stuff for a little bit, I sit down and really dive in with those questions. Where do you want to be? And why do you want to be there? You know, we talk about business growth. What is business growth? That’s different? Everybody’s success has a different definition of everybody. What’s your purpose? I really try to hone in and get back to there. Why? Why did you start? Why did you want to be your own boss? Why do you what’s your driving force, we start there. And then automatically, they start writing out and talking out loud and brainstorming, and they start seeing some solutions themselves. And you see, you see their energy change, because quietly, they’re talking out loud to themselves, and they’ve given themselves positive talk, those limiting beliefs are gone, but they just had maybe 20 minutes ago. But when they start realizing how much they know how much they have to offer and how they can serve, they start believing that whatever the situation they have right now, and it can be a big situation, that might take us a couple of months to work through.
But they have the power to make this change if they believe in themselves and do not listen to all the noise of everybody else, not even me don’t even listen to some of the things that I’m saying to you. But dig deep into what I say to you because that’s really my role. I’m that kind of coach or consultant that I’m not going to hand you everything in a bunch of sheets or notebook, we’re going to talk it out loud, and you’re going to do most of the work, I’m just going to kind of open up the door cracker to so you can get all the way through it. And you see it with your own eyes and believe that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to?
Well, I think everyone who’s listening imagines what it would be like to have you as their coach. So with that in mind, this is my final question. What preparation should somebody do? Before they have their first session with you as their coach?
Bobbi Brinkman 18:38
I think any coach, in general, sits down and really determines what it is you want to accomplish. When you get ready to start a relationship. Just like when you go and get ready to hire a client. Make sure it’s the right fit, you know, is somebody going to give you just a bunch of workbooks and you gotta work through it is somebody going to be there to have a conversation? I want to have those hard conversations.
I’m known as that gentle, hard push because I’m going to push you and challenge you because I know you have it in you. So preparation is writing down what it is you don’t like about where you are now and why you think you’re stuck. And I want you to write to be honest, why is it not working? What are the things that I’m doing? And you write it down? And then where do you want to go if you could accomplish and fix these things? What’s that middle ground? Let’s do that middle step. And then after you get that stepped on, ultimately, where do you want to go?
I’m not a big proponent of having a five and 10-year plan because I think we all grow as individuals and that plan might change. But plans and goals need to be flexible and so do you because as you learn, you grow, you might go you know what I thought about doing that three years ago, I’m glad I changed my path a little bit. And I’m going down this way to an offer a new product or a new service where instead of spending all this money on maybe buying a bunch of new equipment, whatever niche you’re in, and then deciding, oh, you know what, I don’t even like doing that anymore. So you sit down and be honest with yourself, what’s working now? What would you like to improve on? And then where do you want to take these improvements for the next year, maybe a year and a half. And they continue that process and if you have those micro-steps, you can really build a solid foundation to build your business on so you have both business growth and personal growth.
This has been brilliant Bobbi, I know that there are going to be people that are going to want to reach out to you what’s the best way for them to do that?
Bobbi Brinkman 20:19
You know, they can reach out to me on my website is BobbiBrinkman.com. You can go there and see all the ways to work with me, to have me speak, to book a Fabbo Chat– or you want to go to Instagram I’m Bobbi dot Brinkman. I’m here just to cheer you on. And there are times that sometimes you just need somebody to remind you, you need somebody else to be your cheerleader.
